<itunes:summary>How many words for LOVE? Ghada Amer and Sookyung Yee at Frieze NY.
Kukje / Tina Kim Gallery Ξ The gallery brought to Frieze New York sculptures that beckoned the viewer to take a closer, a second, or perhaps even a third look. As Eliza Coleman, Director of the Kukje / Tina Kim Gallery, explained the stories behind these two sculptures that we have featured here, it became instantly clear that these works were not run-off-the-mill compositions, but derivatives of deep, thought-through processes.

"Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" - this phrase could not be truer than in the case of the sculpture by the Korean artist Sookyung Yee. While one would normally dispose off broken ceramic ware, she transformed these discarded objects to create a stirring piece of sculpture - one without any signs of damage or breakage. The sculpture is truly a sum of parts; as one takes a closer look, it is evident that there is a cup here and a vase there; a teapot here and a bowl there. Together they form a unique identity. Sookyung Kee has fused them together almost creating a soldered effect that one sees in stained glass paintings - except in this case, she has used gold leaf!

From the gallery: "[Sookyung Yee] still wants to keep that intention that they are separate in some way but they have grown together to build a new purpose..."

The second sculpture we selected for our interview was by a renown Egyptian artist Ghada Amer. A massive spherical sculpture, this work by the artist is a continuation of what she started years ago - an exploration of "love". It is essentially an exploration of paradoxes between the Arabic and the Western culture with regards to this emotion and word - love.

Eliza Coleman: "[Ghada Amer] was interested in this idea that in a culture where there is an understanding of not publicly expressing your love, yet there are so many ways to say "love".

<itunes:summary>Teresita Fernandez and Do Ho Suh at Lehmann Maupin Gallery
Lehmann Maupin Gallery Ξ The gallery focused its exhibition space at Frieze New York's second installment art fair on two artists with different backgrounds, visions and techniques. In our interview with the gallery's director Carla Camacho we focused on the two artists' inspiration for the works represented at Frieze.

Teresita Fernandez is a well-established American artists whose former commissions include a range of sculptural installations at the Louis Vuitton flagship store in Shanghai. The artist used pyrite, a bright shiny material, also known as fool's gold, to create a beautiful inverted sculpture of the Yellow Mountains which was then suspended from the ceiling of the boutique. In her newest work, created especially for the art fair, Fernandez returned to the subject using a different set of tools and media to create the new landscape. Here she created the landscape across three joined vertical panels using india ink on gold chroming. The effect is an etherial and veil like wash of monochrome pigment spanning the length of the wall.

From the gallery: "These new drawings become like gestural film stills or cinematic panoramas."

Do Ho Suh's work also references constructed landscapes, albeit on a very different scale. For the gallery's booth at Frieze the Korean-born artist has faithfully recreated his living quarters while doing a residency in Berlin. Everything, down to the wall-mounted telephone, power outlets and door knobs has been faithfully recorded and recreated in this life-size installation made of green polyester fabric.

From the gallery: "Conceived while in residency at the DAAD Artists in Berlin Program from August 2009 to 2010, Do Ho Suh's Wielandstr.18, 12159 Berlin (2011) is a life-size replica of the three corridors within the 18th-century apartment the artist called home during his time in Germany."

DO HO SUH Wielandstr. 18, 12159 Berlin, 2011 polyester fabric 138.58 x 82.68 x 258.27 inches 352 x 210 x 656 cm Edition of 3.

TERESITA FERNÁNDEZ Golden (Panorama) (detail), 2013 gold chroming and India ink on wood panel 3 panels, each: 72 x 48 x 2 inches.

<itunes:summary>Hollis Taggart Galleries Ξ As you enter the main space of the gallery the very first thing that demands your attention is a mural-sized triptych with a surprising title: Munchkins I, II & III, 1964. The large horizontal painting with sharp graphic elements contrasted by a minimal palette of whites, yellows and blacks depicts several male silhouettes ascending and descending a series of escalators. Next to it a life-scale black acrylic plexi-glass cut-out silhouette of a girl or a woman jumping a yellow neon rope. This work, whimsical, happy and humorous is titled simply Jump Rope Lady, 1966. Across from that is another canvas with silhouettes of two women in a painting titled Step Sisters, 1964. And suddenly it hits you - these are all anonymous forms that are meant to represent absolutely anyone. All these "people" are a part of Idelle Weber's vision of Pop Art, the subject of the current exhibition at this Upper East Side gallery in Manhattan.

In our conversation, Vivian Bullaudy, Director at Hollis Taggart Galleries, mentioned that Idelle Weber's art was derived from her personal views of the time. So very true! In this exhibition of Ms. Weber's artworks from the 1960's and 70's, it was evident that she did not entirely conform to the definition of Pop Art.

She picked subjects that were a departure from pure commercial imagery of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and instead focused on her own experiences and presented the world as she saw it. The current exhibition is a culmination of her keen observations and her interpretation of New York 50+ years ago. Take for example, Press Type Law Firm, 1965-66 that she essentially derived from her observations of the environment her attorney husband worked in. A standard Manhattan office with standard men in standard suits, doing standard tasks... Can't you see just a character straight out of Alfred Hitchcock's films in Weber's faceless men?

A conversation with Idelle Weber was an unforgettable experience full of unique stories about her interactions with Mark Rothko, (she babysat for Rothko's daughter Kate on several occasions and the great painter walked her home each time), the great Ivan Karp (the late founder of the famous OK Harris Gallery in SoHo), and of course Robert Motherwell (then a professor at New York's Hunter College). In those times, when female artists were very few (a ratio that has not undergone a sea-change even today), Idelle Weber's memoir of her interaction with Motherwell was insightful. As she recounted the historic encounter, it became instantly clear that there were boundaries set and pre-requisites to be met before a female artist could be a part of the male-dominated art/gallery world. Unfazed, composed and determined, Ms. Weber went on to carve a niche for herself!

There is little doubt as to how iconic her imagery is, and how symbolic it is of the 1960's. Case in point - the wildly popular Mad Men series on AMC uses a silhouetted icon to represent their main protagonist - Donald Draper, which has an unmistakable Weber-esque quality to it. Visit the exhibition to experience the original 1960's imagery for yourself!

The exhibition Idelle Weber: The Pop Years is on view at Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York through April 25, 2013.

<itunes:summary>Iconic photographs by Irving Penn, Edward Weston and Ruth Bernhard in focus at AIPAD 2013.
Scott Nichols Gallery Ξ Monochromatic kaleidoscope of classic imagery by the most recognizable artists of their time and medium - these words best describe the works brought by the San Francisco based Scott Nichols Gallery to AIPAD, 2013. A specialist in fine art photography, the gallery presented unique works by Irving Penn - ranging from his intimate portraits of well-known people, like Truman Capote, (discussed in this interview) Al Pacino, Pablo Picasso and Miles Davis, to his highly stylized fashion photographs for VOGUE.

In our conversation with Mr. Nichols, we also discovered a rare - very rare - double shell by Edward Weston. It is the only known photograph of double shells that is available for sale! Edward Weston's name is synonymous with classic American photography of the first half of the 20th century. A staple at the top photography auctions, Weston's subjects ranged from vast desert landscapes (Dunes Oceano) to the contorted peppers, cabbages and mushrooms that lent their terrific forms to new interpretations of shape.

One photograph that will forever stay in our minds is the captivating Hips Horizontal, 1975 by Ruth Berhard. The contours, the play of shadows and the sheer simplicity make the photograph just unforgettable! The beauty of this photograph is in the way it presents only a slice of the entire image, causing the mind to wander and complete the picture.

We asked Mr. Nichols which two photographs he would have liked to own as a collector. He donned the collector's hat and pointed towards Edward Weston's Shells, 1927 and Ruth Berhard's Hips Horizontal, 1975. We are not surprised, and in his place, we would have most likely pointed towards the same photographs!

<itunes:summary>Legendary Photographers at Rick Wester Fine Art.
Rick Wester Fine Art Ξ Learning about important vintage photographs from the specialist who has dedicated his entire career to photography, makes for nothing less than a perfect conversation. We had one such conversation with Rick Wester, Director of Rick Wester Fine Art at AIPAD 2013. We asked him about the three star artworks in his booth and he was almost instinctively drawn to Horst P. Horst's Round the Clock (featured image, above) as his first choice. This phenomenal photograph has a unique composition and tends to convey a new lyrical note every time we look at it - maybe it is because of the stance, or the ruffled layers of the frock, even perhaps the intrigue generated by the title of the photograph!

This version of the famous image happens to be a Platinum print - a more exclusive and a higher-end version of the silver print. That unravelled the mystery that had been on our minds for close to 2 hours, ever since we first laid our eyes on Edward Weston's Nautilus Shell 1927 at another booth at the fair. You see, at the Phillips auction the previous day, the Weston photograph was estimated at $5,000 to $7,000, and was sold for $6,250, while the same photograph was on offer at another booth at AIPAD for close to $10,000! Well, now we know that the photographs may look the same, but it is the "Platinum" that made the cut over the "Silver" print. Thank you, Mr. Wester.

The next two photographs Rick Wester selected were Irving Penn's Black & White Vogue Cover (Jean Patchett) and Josef Sudek's A Walk in Mionší, 1955 - 1970. Each of these had unique qualities that made for a high collectible value. Irving Penn is a highly regarded artist and this photograph has a painterly feature to it - in its flatness lies the volume of its star quality. Josef Sudek's photograph, dedicated to Tennyson Schad, is a window into the world of the artist. By not removing the frame of the photograph, Sudek has allowed the viewer to see the moment the way he saw it.

We asked Rick Wester to wear a collector's hat and tell us which photograph from his booth would he have liked to include in his own collection. His eyes moved towards Laurie Lambrecht's Hangzhou Koi, 2009...

AIPAD 2013 is the vintage art lover's dream come true. We found an almost 70:30 ratio in favor of the sheer number of vintage and modern photographs over contemporary works at the fair. What made the art fair even more delightful was the relatively affordable price tags on the works.

<itunes:summary>Sebastiao Salgado: GENESIS at Peter Fetterman Gallery.
Peter Fetterman Gallery Ξ In somewhat of a contrast to the biblical timeline, the Brazilian-born, Paris-based Sebastiao Salgado completed his GENESIS in just eight years. Traveling across the five continents the photographer, who bears a striking resemblance to the famous American artist Richard Serra, documented a wide range of locations, subjects, emotions and situations. His expansive, high-contrast images at times read like journalistic diaries, each a snapshot of something very transient. And as you examine each of the frames, you can't help but recall the famous National Geographic images of places far, far away.

Most of us don't come in contact with any of the elements in Salgado's photographs - the Indian miners, the fierce lions, tribal African women with lip plates and chin implants, the monumental icebergs, the stampeding herds of large animals, they exist somewhere outside of the comforts of our flat-screen TV's and computer screens. And yet, the rest of the world is there. Salgado's portraits of the Bushmen women, the Mursi and the Surma, and many others, capture intensely intimate moments in the lives of his subjects. And while his landscapes impress by the sheer span of his lens, it is the way Salgado sees people that makes him an extraordinary photographer.

In this interview Peter Fetterman, talked about the top three images at the gallery's booth at AIPAD, focusing on the photograph taken in Southern Sudan, titled "Cattle camp of Kei", the "Chinstrap penguin colony" taken in Antarctica, and the "Church Gate Station" in Bombay.

Sebastiao Salgado's GENESIS exhibition opens at the National History Museum in London on April 11 and runs through September 8, 2013.

Here are some of the images from the GENESIS project.

<itunes:summary>Adam Fowler's "Escaping Forward" at Margaret Thatcher Projects
Margaret Thatcher Projects Ξ The goal is to surpass the limitations of the medium. For example, how do you make an opaque surface appear "transparent" and open, is it possible to give direction to a stationary object and how do you expand past the dimensions of the surface itself? Or, say, you have a single sheet of paper that measures 27" x 40", is it possible then to create a single continuous installation that extends well past these dimensions? Adam Fowler resolves the first issues by carefully mapping out, drawing and then layering sheets of incised paper in a way that allows his gestures to appear open or dense, approaching or receding, ordered or random, depending on the artist's vision. The only indication we get of the depth of each individual work is from the title itself. Untitled, 3 would have 3 layers of paper, Untitled, 7 - 7, Untitled, 41 - well, you get the idea.

In works like this there is always a danger of over-ambitious chaos taking over what's meant to be a simple composition and creating noise, but Adam's work, regardless of the density of gesture and paper, carries within it a balance and becomes almost meditational. Adam's methodic approach to his work is impressive, but what's far more interesting is the rhythm he created with every composition. Even though he referred to the drawing process as being highly stressful - her prefers cutting the paper, Adam's gestures - drawn in a scale of grays - are confident and fluid. There is a clear sense of purpose for every intersection, every loop and every expanded curve and that confidence is what brings the viewer back to start and continue the dialogue with the artwork.
